From the Rector
Dollar Academy has never been stronger. Our enrolment is robust, our teaching staff second to none, our exam results superb, and our future exciting. Like everything, schools develop, and Dollar has developed a great deal whilst still maintaining its ethos and traditions.
Long-term, the Governors are looking at how to maintain our standards of excellence, and there are a number of initiatives and projects which will enhance Dollar in the future. Our balance sheet is very healthy, but fee income alone cannot accommodate all the improvements and changes we envisage. Prudent fiscal management ensures that the school operates with a surplus each year, and we have no debt whatsoever. Currently, we have a modest endowment, only the income of which is available each year. In order to provide new facilities, we also seek other forms of revenue on an ongoing basis to enable us to do more in our provision of a Dollar education.
Our approach will continue to be one of careful financial management in partnership with philanthropic gifts on a continuous basis. The six-figure legacy in 2004 from the Maguire family was a marvellous beginning and helped tremendously with recent major capital project, now The Maguire Building which houses a studio theatre, the Art and Design department, conference facilities, and the Games Hall, Fitness Suite and dressing room complex for over 200 users at a time. As a development from the Maguire initiative, we introduced The Captain John McNabb Society, and are now encouraging our former pupils to consider leaving a legacy in their wills as a way of helping future generations in the Academy. The Society has over eighty members already.
We aim to encourage members of the Dollar family to give back to Dollar Academy in various ways. We have firmly established The 1802 Foundation in order to encourage giving to Dollar Academy on a regular basis, rather than by a large appeal. Already, the first bursary awards have been made to enable full access to young people who would not otherwise be able to attend Dollar Academy. The vision of Dollar’s founder has a powerful impact over 200 years after John McNabb made such generous provision for the young people of this community.
