The areas surrounding Dollar is an angler’s dream with over twenty fisheries within an hour’s drive, most with fabulous scenery; we also run sea fishing trips from Arbroath. Four Tunas Fishing Excursions Summer 2011

This seasons’ fishing kicked off with a sea fishing trip from Arbroath aboard MV Girl Katrine II.  About a dozen boys came on the trip and a great day was had by all.  The fishing from Arbroath is very good. Early in the season the catch tends to be limited to cod, but later on a wide variety of species can be caught. In the past we have caught cod, pollock, wrasse, mackerel and hake all on the same trip. The local fishermen have a vested interest in maintaining the fishing so minimum catch sizes are always adhered to closely. This trip was in May, which is quite early in the season, so the catch was limited to one species – cod. However, most of our boys were successful with some decent sized fish being landed.

The remainder of the trips this year have been to Orchill Fishery near Braco. This is a friendly and scenic fishery which we find suits our needs very well. The loch fished very well this year and every trip was productive, even for the two novices that joined us. The fish from Orchill are stocked rainbow trout, generally in the 2-3lb region, but there is also a population of wild brown trout which present more of a challenge to experienced fishermen. It is a very pleasant place to unwind after a busy day at school. Indeed, one afternoon we were treated to a fishing display by the local expert – an osprey.

Fishing trips will resume in the spring of 2012, probably just before the Easter break. A meeting will be help nearer the time but, in the meantime, senior school pupils can speak to Mr Ainge in the Biology Department for details or simply to express interest.
