The Brock Shield

On Sunday 31st May, the Dollar Academy shooting team headed out into the wilderness of Castlelaw Range in Edinburgh for another glorious day of shooting in the summer sunshine.
The day began at a suicidal 7am, a time which most of the Dollar participants struggled to cope with! However, by the time we had reached the range and discovered that the sky was blue, the sun was shining and the wind was minimal, spirits lifted, and soon ‘Camp Dollar’ was set up at the 300 firing point. Competing at three separate distances against schools such as Merchiston, Glasgow Academy, Sedburgh and Queen Victoria meant that it was necessary for the whole team to remain focused and calm, and to compete to the best of our ability at all three distances. Even after our first distance at 300 metres, we knew that the team was shooting well – Ewan McConnell managed to shoot an outstanding 32.3, alongside one of our younger shooters, Rebecca Davis, who finished with an impressive 32.1.

After a fun-filled, competitive day in the blistering sun, it was eventually time for the scores and prize-winners to be announced. Dollar’s shooting team proved to have been very successful – ‘The Eight’, comprising of Eilidh Stewart, Jenny Waters, Ewan Torrance, Tiernan Lean, Jennifer McIntosh, Matthew Robson, David Dick and Ewan McConnell went on to win the Brock Shield, with an impressive overall score of 696.49, beating the other schools by over 100 points! Moreover, Dollar came first in ‘The Four’ category, with Rebecca Davis, Duncan MacCallum, Ruari Jardine and Julia Melling beating the second place Sedburgh team by over seventy points. Becki Stevens and Alisdair Melling, who made up ‘The Pair’ also went on to win in their category, narrowly beating the rival Sedburgh team.
Dollar was also very successful on an individual level, with Edward Currie winning the ‘Ninth Man’ competition, finishing with an impressive overall aggregate of 92.1. Moreover, Dollar’s Ewan McConnell also went on to win the Ranken Cup with a commendable 44.2 - a difficult shoot in which a single shooter from each team individually coaches himself to, in our case, a winning score!

Overall the day proved to be an all-round success, and the team are very much looking forward to our further training and competitions throughout the summer months in preparation for Bisley.
