The Joanna Morgan Jones Educational Trust Bursary
Information for all applicants
The Joanna Morgan Jones Educational Trust (JMJET) was established in 2013 in memory of Joanna Morgan Jones, a former pupil of Dollar Academy who became Head Girl in 1987, and who went on to study medicine at Aberdeen University and enjoy a varied and immensely rewarding career specialising in psychiatry. Joanna had always dreamed of becoming a doctor and serving those in medical need and set about achieving her ambition with characteristic determination, focus, humour and energy.
When Joanna died in March 2012, her mother and father decided to establish a Trust to provide a bursary at Dollar Academy for new applicants to study for two years in Forms V and VI. To apply for the award, you should therefore be in Form IV (S4) at your current school or its equivalent. The terms of the Trust require that the applicant should show a keen interest in pursuing a career in a medically-related field, and that the award of the bursary be based on a process of means-testing. Part of the application process therefore requires applicants to submit a short piece outlining their ambitions in this area. This will form an important part of the application. It should be understood from the outset that should a bursary recipient subsequently decide to change his or her mind about choice of career, or indeed not succeed in the aim of pursuing tertiary study in the field, then this will have no bearing on the award, which will continue to stand. To help an award holder to understand more fully the implications of any choice they may make the Trustees will offer a mentor, currently practising in the medical field, who can offer support or guidance and assist in the decision-making process. The decision to accept the offer of a mentor or not lies entirely with the award holder, and can be revoked or reactivated at any time and for any reason. It is of the utmost concern to the Trustees that bursary-holders feel entirely free for their career to develop in whatever way they might wish following receipt of an award.
Applicants should be aware that only one award is available in each year, which will cover tuition for the successful applicant in Forms V and VI.
An application form is available and can be downloaded by clicking on the link at the foot of this page, or by contacting the Bursar’s Office at Dollar Academy, on 01259 740515 or email firstname.lastname@example.org, from where advice on any aspect of the process can also be obtained. It is important that the form is completed fully and accurately – especially with regard to providing evidence of financial circumstances. Completed applications should be returned to the address at the foot of this letter by no later than Tuesday 1st April 2014. The Trustees will make their decision on recipients of any awards and will aim to inform both successful and unsuccessful applicants of their decision by letter by the end of May 2014. The decision of the Trustees will be final.
Please ensure that the application includes:
- The completed, signed Bursary Application Form & Confidential Statement of Financial Circumstances.
- Supporting evidence for all salary and income figures appearing on the above statement.
- A typed submission, on no more than one side of A4 paper, signed and dated by the pupil applicant outlining the reasons for making an application.
- School reports for the last two academic sessions.
The Trustees, Joanna Morgan Jones Educational Trust, c/o 23 West Burnside, Dollar, FK14 7DX.
