Head of Classics
Inspiring, agile-minded, well-qualified Classics specialist required to lead this highly successful department. The ideal candidate will be a strong sixth form teacher, able to offer Latin, Greek and Classical Studies to Oxbridge level, but candidates without Greek are encouraged to apply. Applicants should have a passion for Classics, together with a commitment to developing pupils’ interests in the classical world and its legacy.
In addition to being able to teach at all levels with confidence and authority, the successful candidate will also require the organisational and communication skills that are essential to the smooth running and successful development of a thriving department.
Latin and Classical Studies are taught to all pupils in Forms I and II, making use of a range of innovative and creative materials produced within the department to supplement standard texts. Both subjects are then taught as options through the school right up to Advanced Higher level. Many of those who take either or both subjects go on to read Classics or Archaeology at University. There is a strong history of teaching Greek at Dollar and, currently, the subject is timetabled at Higher and Advanced Higher level. In our teaching, there is an emphasis on encouraging our pupils to develop to the best of their abilities the range of skills needed to interpret all types of source material, and also to acquire the command of language needed to translate accurately and elegantly from Latin and Greek into English.
There are four teachers in the department, which is housed in its own building on campus. Both our main classrooms are excellent teaching spaces and a third classroom in the Playfair building is ideal for seminar-style teaching with smaller groups of Form VI pupils. Individual teachers make a significant contribution to Classics teaching on the national stage and, in recent years, the department has organised popular and successful trips to Hadrian’s Wall, Rome and Pompeii.
In addition to its curricular provision, Dollar Academy also offers a rich array of co-curricular activities and has a significant number of boarding pupils living on campus. A willingness to participate in other aspects of Academy life would be expected.
The post will be full time.
The salary for the post will be in accordance with the Scottish scales, with the Dollar enhancement of 10% in addition; all teachers in Dollar should be GTC registered or eligible for registration.
Applicants must either be registered with GTC Scotland, or eligible for registration. All teaching appointments are subject to confirmation of GTC Scotland registration and also to clearance through the Disclosure Scotland Protection of Vulnerable Groups Scheme.
Letters of application, accompanied by the completed application form (which can be downloaded by clicking on the link below), should be sent to The Rector, Dollar Academy, Dollar FK14 7DU, by 8th February (or e-mail to rector@dollaracademy.org.uk).
