JUNIOR BURNS COMPETITION 2012
Dollar Academy Junior School was a hive of activity as it played host to this year’s annual Burns Competition on Tuesday 31st January. 51 finalists from across all seven Junior classes took part, performing with valour and enthusiasm.
Again, as in previous years, the standard was exceptionally high and the works chosen extremely varied, including a number of songs sung solo and unaccompanied.
Mrs Kate Murray, Head of English, and Mr Graham Pearson and Mr David Murray from the Dollar Burns Society, had the tremendously difficult challenge of selecting the finalists. After an engrossing afternoon the judges picked nine winners:
Sophie Chandler J2C sang ‘Ye Jacobites by Name’
Sophie Ferguson J2H recited ‘To a Louse’
Morven Garrick J2H sang ‘Ye Jacobites by Name’
Georgia Garry J2H recited ‘To a Louse’
Imogen Hubbard J2C sang ‘Wild Mountain Thyme’
Isaac Lowry J2D recited ‘Man was made to Mourn’
Katie Robertson J1N recited ‘Scots Wha Hae’
Erin Stevens J2C sang ‘My Heart’s in the Highlands’
Jenny Walls J2N recited ‘Death and Dr. Hornbrook’
The overall winner, who was presented with the Quaich, for the second year running, was Jenny Walls. Her emotional and energetic recitation captivated the judges and consisted of a staggering 31 lengthy verses.
Congratulations go to all the Juniors who took part and spent many long hours learning their poems and songs by heart.
