My Scottish Corner

My favourite place in Scotland is the Isle of Tiree.  When I was little I would go there.  I remember staying at my Gran and Grandad’s house in Oban and then getting on the ferry in the morning.  It took about an hour.

The one odd thing is that there are no trees except for one old pine.  I remember competing to see who could climb it the fastest.  I also remember that I was quite scared of going too far out to sea because there are basking sharks although they only eat plankton and quill but they are bigger than great white sharks.   We would catch shrimp and crabs with our nets. Another strange thing is that there was only one petrol station and an old white horse would stand and drink the diesel and petrol.

On the beaches, when we were having our lunch one afternoon, we had unexpected visitors like a donkey or horse or sheep or even a herd of cows.  Sometimes the sheep would eat some of the sandwiches.  Although I liked it, because it was so windy, my sandwich would get covered in sand if we weren’t in the wind break.

The island is so tiny that everybody cycles everywhere.   The cottages are normally made of wood and have either thatched straw roofs or wooden ones.  There are quite often thunderstorms at night but, strangely, they helped me get to sleep.  But, in the morning, it felt like it was only sunny at night.

But, the worst part is the going home part.  Once you are there you never want to go home.  We are going there this summer with our friends.  Tiree is definitely my favourite part of Scotland.

My favourite place in Scotland is North Inch Park.  When I was 4, I learned to ride my bike without stabilisers there.  It is my favourite place because of two things.  One is that, in the winter, just before Christmas, when I was only 2, I said my first word (ice).

And when I go there, whatever season it is, there is always beauty.  In the spring, the air is full of the  sweet fragrance of nectar, and there are bursts of colour everywhere.  In summer, there is life everywhere, more cyclists than any other season, roses and sweet raspberries.  In the autumn, the amazing golds and reds, and even browns coat the trees and cover the grass.  But I like winter best.  There might not be as many cyclists as usual, but that means it is peaceful.  Glittering snow stretches as far as the eye can see!  Icicles glow in the soft sunlight.  But, there is no sound.

It is a cycling park so it is no surprise I learned to ride there.  I like to throw coins in the well and wish for my dreams.  There is a small climbing frame which I like to climb and fall off.  One of the best features is a huge hill that I like to cycle fast down.  If I take Jake (my dog) there, he starts to play with his friends.  He must love it as much as I do!  I love to skim across thin patches of ice with my bike, or dodge clusters of bluebells.  I always buy a lump of hokey-pokey.  It always looks rustic out there.

Sometimes I go with my gran, sometimes I go with father.  I don’t really care who I go with as long as we have a good time!

My favourite place in Scotland is Skye because it is so sunny and beautiful most of the time.  When I went to Skye, the journey was quite long but it didn’t matter because, when I got there, it was so welcoming.  I went over the Skye Bridge and it was like a painting.  The water was so clean and, if you looked carefully, you could see the ferry with people waving at you as if they had known you for ages.

There were lots of places to go to see.  My favourite was at the cliffs.  The water was see-through.  I can’t imagine how lovely it must look out at sea.  The fish were jumping through the water and, if you were lucky, you could see a dolphin.  There was also an old mill out in the country in a small cottage where there was a quiz to do while you were looking around.

Our hotel was not far out of the bay and, at night, you could go for a walk and see the huge sun setting behind the sea.   It was so light.  When you walked back to the hotel you could have the best fish ever.

We did not get to go on it but there was another ferry that took you out to sea.  When I went to bed, it was quite annoying but I got used to it.  I could hear fishing boats coming in from a long journey and the waves crashing against the rocks on the beach.

Although I did not like the midges in Skye, It is a great place and I hope I can go back.

My favourite place in Scotland is Kingsbarns because there is a lovely beach there and a stream you can swim in during the summer.  There is a good cycle path that leads to a farm.

In the summer time, when the tide is out, we can swim in the sea or play on a rock with loads of interesting sea creatures on it.  Sometimes, when my uncle comes, we go exploring for sea anemones and other interesting sea creatures.

When we go on a walk, we go into a forest, a beautiful place with a fifty centimetre deep stream which leads out to sea.  It is a lovely place and you see lots of wildlife.  On the cycle path, which leads up to the farm, there is a lovely view.  At the farm, there are lots of animals like horses, pigs, sheep and goats.  I really like the animals there and I have given them all odd names.

Once a year, in August, there is the annual flower show and you can enter the fruit, vegetable and flowers competitions.  There is also a children’s section where you can do things like a novelty vegetable animal, a painted stone, a vase of wild flowers, a decorated garden in a biscuit tin lid or garden leaves on cardboard and much more.

Kingsbarns has so much to do.  That is why I like it so much.
