Prep 5 Botanics
Prep 5 visited the Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh to find out more about the rainforests.

The pupils wrote reports and poems in response.
Rainforest Reports
I never thought that bamboo could be so useful or that one single leaf could shelter so many of us.

It is amazing how much we depend on the rainforest. Hundreds of thousands of animals do as well. Even parasites like the Strangler Fig need the rainforest.
Cameron |
I was impressed when Adam and Kara tried to pop a balloon with a blow pipe. Keiran. |
I can remember two words Mrs Franklin taught us. They were biodiversity and sustainability. Gavin. |
My favourite part was when we were finding the fruit, shelter and medicines. I enjoyed looking at the fish. I was fascinated that chocolate, bananas, ginger and figs came from the rainforest.
Georgia |
When we went into the greenhouse, we had to split into groups and find as many different orchids as we could. My group saw seventeen and were amazed when we heard there were really 70! Colm |

If trees could talk
They would tell us
About the beauty of the rainforest
Bright coloured orchids shining in the sunshine
The vivid colours lighting up the sky.
Rory

If trees could talk
They would have different hopes
Because they have seen the cutting and the chopping
So they know the horrible things we have done.
Alasdair

If trees could talk
They would say,
I hope that humans understand what they are destroying each day.
Maddie

If trees could talk
They would tell us about the beauty of the rainforest
The vivid coloured leaves that dance round the trees
While the monkeys swing and the birds swoop
Through the canopy.
The bugs wander around
On the vine high ways,
While the saplings shoot up
They are the trees of the future.
The rain drips off
The wax coated leaves
That animals use for shelter.
They don’t want to get wet.
Along come the men
With chain saws and axes.
They chop down everything in sight
Until there is just infertile soil.
I hope for the future they will leave the rainforest in peace.
