On Thursday 25 September, the annual Form I Activities day took place at Dollar.  This very lively event on the school calendar unfailingly showcases the tremendous energy levels, capacity for creativity and general enthusiasm of the Form I year group (not to mention the teachers and guidance staff working with the year group).

17 October 2014: Dollar Academy Players Represent Midland at Scottish District Tournament

 

Congratulations are owed to the many Dollar Academy hockey players who represented Midand at the Inter-district U16 and U18 Championship on the weekend of the 4-5 October.  The championship took place at the National Hockey Academy at the University of Edinburgh’s Peffermill playing fields.

Rafting
17 October 2014: Advanced Higher Geography Pupils Undertake Field Trip to Aberfeldy


From 1-3 October, ten Advanced Higher Geography pupils travelled together to Aberfeldy in order to learn about fieldwork techniques.  The pupils were accompanied by Mr McConnell (Head of Geography) and Mrs Scott (Geography Teacher) on this adventure into the Perthshire countryside.

Slalom

14 October 2014: Junior School Skiers to Compete in Scottish Schools Dual Slalom Finals After Success in Qualifer Races

 

Four young pupils from Dollar Academy’s Junior School were thrilled to find that they will be going to the Scottish Schools Dual Slalom finals at Glasgow’s Snow Factor on Wednesday 29 October.  This is a result of having decisively won the qualifier for this event, which was held on Wednesday 1 October.

14 October 2014: Charities Committee Host Form I Disco

 

The first major event on the Charities Committee calendar took place on Thursday 21 September: the Form I Disco.  It marked the beginning of what looks to be a very successful year for the Charities Committee 2014-2015.

Exchange Visit 2014
9 October 2014: French, German and Spanish Exchange Pupils Visit Dollar


In late September, Dollar Academy played host to three sets of exchange groups comprising a total of fifty-five pupils.  While these exchanges happen every year at Dollar, this year was unique in that the three groups arrived in Dollar at the same time—this has never happened before. The result was a kind of ‘happy invasion’, said Ms Sieger (German Teacher), of Dollar Academy by Spanish, French and German pupils.

9 October 2014: Dollar FII Pupil Selected for Scotland U17 Girls’ Cricket Squad

 

The 2014-2015 Scotland U17 Girls’ Cricket Squad has been announced and a remarkable young Dollar Academy pupil has made the squad.  Màili Gardiner (FII) is only fourteen, one of the youngest to make the team, but her passion for the sport makes the reason for her selection obvious.

9 October 2014: Dollar Pupil Recognised for Swimming Success

 

Kirstin Lawrie (FII) is to be congratulated on having been selected to represent Scotland West at the National Inter-counties Championships being held in Sheffield this month. She was selected for this as a result of competing against other girls, aged fourteen or less, in the 100m Butterfly, within the area covered by Scotland West.

3 October 2014: Prep School Hold MacMillan Coffee Morning
The Prep School’s staff and pupils hosted their own Macmillan World’s Biggest Coffee Morning on Friday 26 September.  Everyone in the Prep School was involved in the very ambitious planning, preparation and coordination for the event.  It is an annual tradition for the Prep School, and so a certain standard is there to be met.

25 September 2014: Dollar Academy Rugby Players Beat Hutchesons’ Grammar, 24-14, in First Round of Brewin Dolphin U18 Cup Match


On Wednesday 24 September, members of Dollar Academy’s 1st XV rugby team defeated Hutchesons’ Grammar School in the first round of the Brewin Dolphin U18 Scottish Schools Cup Match. The final score was 24-14. The match took place at Dollar Academy before a very large and appreciative crowd of supporters.

24 September 2014:FVI Pupil Interviews Keith Brown, MSP, Ahead of Scottish Referendum
Just a fortnight before the Scottish Referendum, Amenah Cheema (FVI), managed to secure an exclusive interview with Keith Brown, MSP.  Amenah is a student of English, History, Classical Studies, Philosophy and Journalism with aspirations to study Law; it is fair to say that she takes politics very seriously indeed.  She contributes to the school’s award-winning magazine, The Galley, and just been named its Features Editor.

18 September 2014: The Daily Telegraph Interviews Dollar Pupils During Big, Big Debate


On the evening of Thursday 11 September, Jim White, Chief Features Editor of The Daily Telegraph, arrived at Argyll House, with photographer and cameraman in tow.  These top journalists had requested to come to Dollar Academy in order to sit in the company of young Dollar pupils as they watched the Big, Big Debate being held in Glasgow’s SECC Hydro, being televised by the BBC.   Dollar Academy was chosen because of its outstanding reputation for debating, and the journalists were not to be disappointed.

16 September 2014: Gavin Hay (FIII) Qualifies to Compete in The Horse of the Year Show 2014

Gavin Hay (FIII) will, in a few weeks’ time, be competing in The Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) 2014.  This prestigious equestrian event takes place at the NEC in Birmingham from October 8-12 and, it is fair to say, Gavin is fairly excited about being able to compete there, in the 143 cm Working Hunter Pony of the Year Final.

16 September 2014: Advanced Higher Biology Pupils Visit Kindrogan Field Center

On 14 September, Dollar Academy’s Biology Department took 35 Form VI pupils to Kindrogan Field Centre in Perthshire. For four days, Dr Payne, Mrs Macdonald, Mr Ainge, and Mr Fraser (Teachers of Biology) oversaw the pupils as they conducted important research and practical work for their Advanced Higher Investigations.

On Saturday 13 September, Dollar Academy opened its doors and welcomed hundreds of visitors to its grounds, buildings and classrooms.  It was the first event of its kind at the school and it was, by all accounts, a very well-received and successful day.

21 August 2014: Dollar Academy Pipe Band Win World Championships
Dollar Academy’s Juvenile Band (known as the ‘A’ Band) have regained their title of Juvenile Pipe Band World Champions at the RSPBA World Pipe Band Championships 2014, which held in Glasgow on Friday 15 August to Saturday 16 August.  223 pipe bands from across the world congregated on Glasgow Green for this important, international competition.

Anita Govan

11 July 2014: Stirling’s Makar, Anita Govan, Coaches Pupils Through ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ Flighting Event


Anita Govan, Stirling’s makar, spent four weeks in May and June working with Mrs Taylor’s FI English class on creative writing and drama.  The result of all this coaching time was a spectacular ‘flighting’ display: a kind of choreographed battle of words and wits and dramatic energy, all inspired by William Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Eve’.

Rosa Loedel (FIV) has been named a British Champion as a result of her gold medal win at the Acrobatic Gymnastics British National Finals that took place at Fenton Manor Sports Complex in Stoke over the weekend of 31 May.

27 June 2014: Junior School Stage ‘The Pirates of Penzance’


This year’s Junior School musical was ‘The Pirates of Penzance’ and it enjoyed a very successful three night run from Wednesday 11 June – Friday 13 June, performing before a full house on each evening.  It had many a FVI pupil hearkening back to their own Junior School performances—as it was seven years ago that ‘Pirates of Penzance’ was last performed on the Dollar Academy stage.

Queens Baton Relay Dollar

27 June 2014: Queen’s Baton Comes to Dollar Academy


On Wednesday 25 June, at around 2 pm, the much-anticipated Queen’s Baton came through Dollar and into Dollar Academy.  The entire student and staff of the Academy were joined by all of Strathdevon Primary’s pupils and many members of the local community to form an eager and delighted audience for the baton as it made its way across Scotland stopping, briefly, at Dollar Academy.

Guys and Dolls
25 June 2014: Guys and Dolls Ends Hugely Successful Run 

      
Dollar Academy’s musical this year, in case anyone somehow missed it, was  ‘Guys and Dolls’: ‘a musical fable’ based on the story and characters of Damon Runyon with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser.  This production ran from Tuesday 17 June-Friday 20 June in the school’s Assembly Hall, which was packed out every evening.

19 June 2014: FIII Pupils Travel to Jupiter Artland On Thursday 15 May, the 3rd year Art pupils went on a trip to Jupiter Artland, a fascinating park which contains many the sculptures of many famous artist from around the globe.  Works by many of today's leading artists, sculptors and land artists have been commissioned and then constructed in situ.

19 June 2014: Judy Murray Coaches Tennis at Dollar Academy
Fifty of Dollar Academy’s young female tennis players were treated to a coaching session with Judy Murray on the morning of Tuesday 27 May.  The girls, from Junior 2 up through FIII, were clearly delighted to receive tips from this renowned tennis mother and elite coach.

Summer Dance

17 June 2014: Summer Ball 2014

 
On Saturday 7 June, Dollar’s FVI pupils braved the rain, looking their most gorgeous, to celebrate the ending of their school careers.  Floor-length dresses seemed to be the young women’s unofficial uniform of the evening, though the range of shades and styles was overwhelming.  The dashing young men—some in suits, some in full Scottish dress—offered an equally impressive glimpse of this generation of Dollar’s pupils, about to enter the world beyond the school gates.

13 June 2014: Seonaid McIntosh (FIV) Selected for Scotland Shooting Squad at Commonwealth Games
It has now been announced that Seonaid McIntosh (FVI) will compete as one of 8 members of the Shooting Squad in this summer’s Commonwealth Games.  She will compete in the Small Bore Rifle- 10m Air Rifle alongside her sister, Jen (FP 2009), who is also on Scotland’s shooting squad for the upcoming Commonwealth Games.

EDT Hall Transformation

10 June 2014: The Assembly Hall Transforms . . .
Mr John Delaney (EDT Teacher) has been in charge of transforming the school’s very traditional Assembly Hall stage into a space upon which the New York City underworld of the 1920s and 1930s will come to life.  ‘Guys and Dolls’, this year’s school musical, is coming up on the calendar: the rehearsals are in full swing, the choreography is coming together, the scenery is being painted and the stage is being constructed, plank by plank.

10 June 2014: Record Number of Advanced Higher Art Pupils Complete Folios


Over 30 Form VI pupil are putting the final touches to their art folios today at Dollar, as they ready them for collection.  This is certainly one of the largest, if not the largest, presentation from any school in Scotland.  It is certainly the largest cohort of folios ever submitted by Dollar Academy pupils working at Advanced Higher level.

4 June 2014: Amberg Exchange 2014

 

Yet again the annual trip to Amberg lived up to all expectations, with 18 F2 pupils sampling all that Bayern has to offer in the way of food, fun and friendship.  The group set off Wednesday 7 May and returned Thursday 15 May, accompanied by Dr Fotheringham and Mrs Brooks (Teachers of Modern Languages).

On Friday 16 May, the Prep and Junior School brought the Commonwealth Games to Scotland (well, to Dollar) just a few weeks early.  Though brisk and a bit grey initially, nothing could dampen the spirits of the 400 children and staff who participated in this hugely entertaining and celebratory event.

3 June 2014: Rachel MacLean’s I HEART SCOTLAND Comes to Dollar

 

On Tuesday 20 May, the Travelling Gallery bus pulled into Dollar Academy, containing within its intimate gallery space the work of Rachel MacLean (FP 2005), one of Scotland’s most talked-about young artists.  Her exhibition, I HEART SCOTLAND, drew a constant stream of curious pupils and staff.

Form I Play 2014

23 June 2014: ‘The Silver Sword’, Form I Play, Ends a Successful Run
This year’s Form I play, ‘The Silver Sword’, has just enjoyed a very successful and popular run of two performances.  On the evenings of 27 May-28 May, Ruth Halden (English Teacher) guided her cast of 35 Form I pupils along as they followed in the footsteps of the Balicki family, refugees from chaotic aftermath of World War II.

28 May 2014: Junior 2 Trip to the Isle of May with the Biology Department

 

Last Sunday, twenty Junior 2 pupils, led by the Biology Department, visited the Isle of May.  The island is a dramatic sight, guarding the mouth of the Firth of Forth as it does.  It lies about 8 kilometres off the coast of the mainland, and is only 1.8 km long and less than half a kilometre wide.

28 May 2014: Sandy Cunningham (FP) Voted Young Player of the Year for Stirling Albion

 

Dollar Academy Former Pupil, Sandy Cunningham (FP 2013), scored what proved to be the winning goal as Stirling Albion earned promotion to SPL Division One in a tough play-off against East Fife in Methil yesterday.

27 May 2014: Dollar Academy Pupil wins Edinburgh Festival Poster Competition

Minnie Roe, a pupil at Dollar Academy, has won the 2014 Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society’s schools poster competition.  This is a remarkable achievement for a fourteen year-old and Minnie’s winning poster was chosen from 3,453 entries from 144 schools across Scotland.

8 May 2014: Rhineland Trip 2014 On Monday 31 March, 28 pupils from Junior 2 and Form I set off for Ulmen, in the Rhineland.  An annual event, the week-long trip puts the pupils in many situations where they must rely upon their German to live, communicate and simply get by in an everyday sense.

Very, very rarely in the sport of cricket, a bowler might manage to take three wickets in consecutive deliveries. On Saturday 19 April, a 1st XI Dollar Academy pupil achieved just such a feat in a match against Fettes College.

Two teams comprised of Dollar Academy’s strongest cadets travelled down to the Welbeck Leadership Challenge on Friday 28 March.  The boys’ team and the girls’ team departed on March 30, having won both first and second place, respectively—a remarkable achievement considering that 19 other schools were in attendance.

On Friday 21 March, 22 of Dollar’s young French scholars from Junior 2, Form I and Form II (accompanied by three FV helpers and four members of staff) departed for a week in France, as part of the annual trip to Clères, a small village north of Rouen in Normandy.

23 April 2014: Form I and II Pupils Visit Toledo


Dollar Academy’s young Spanish scholars travelled to Spain over the Easter Break.  As Mrs Bowie (Modern Languages Teacher and organiser of the trip) says, ‘there must be no better way to commemorate the fourth centenary of the death of El Greco than to visit the stunningly beautiful city of Toledo, where the artist lived and worked for the majority of his life.’

Planting trees is very hard work . . . as 22 Form I, II and III pupils learned on Friday, 11 March.  The pupils had all volunteered their labours for the day to help plant trees along the new section of the Loch Leven Heritage Trail.

Ski Tour 2014

18 April 2014: Ski Tour 2014

 

On Saturday 29 March, 113 Dollar pupils and 16 staff departed Dollar for the snow-laden slopes of Les Menuires in the French Alps. 


Run every two years, the trip is a bit of a Dollar institution.  Many of the same staff attend every trip; they always go to Les Menuires; they even stay in the same hotel, the wonderful Hotel Piolet.

A total of £160 was raised for the Alder Hey Children’s Charity at the Form I party on Thursday 20th February.

18 November 2013: Dollar pupil is Antigua swimming sensation

 

Form V pupil Jasmin SenGupta has just returned from a trip to St Lucia, where she participated at the OECS swim meet representing Antigua and Barbuda.  Jasmin did her country proud by winning 11 medals (6 silver and 5 bronze) for her team, becoming the top scoring girl for Antigua's 65 member team.

This October a group of girls headed off to the small town of Simsbury in Connecticut to spend just over two weeks at the Ethel Walker School. The school, home to just under 250 girls, sends girls to a whole host of the top colleges and universities in America and prides itself on its aspirational and community centred ethos.

Monday 4th   November saw Dollar’s first ever Form IV play  when   “ The Woman in Black” was performed in the Studio Theatre . The play was produced and directed by Duncan Lennon and Hannah Parker (both Form IV) who also gave superb performances in the lead roles.

A fantastic win against Gordonstoun in the semi-final of the 20-20 Cup allowed the Dollar 1st XI to progress to the Championship Final. Unfortunately, Stewarts Melville College were unable to find a free date for the final so the trophy will be shared between the two schools.

Form I Play

21 June 2013: Form I Pupils perform Shakespeare's 'As You Like'.

This year’s Form I play was a one-act version of William Shakespeare’s pastoral comedy ‘As You Like’, and it was performed in the Drama Studio on Tuesday, 28 May and Wednesday, 29 May.

20 June 2013: Form I Pupils Participate in Storytelling Competition
Over a four-week period in May and June, all of Form I participated in the first-ever Dollar Academy Storytelling Competition.  Their study of storytelling would eventually lead to every pupil in FI delivering their own storytelling performance.

Perfect sunshine and warm weather set the scene for Dollar’s 20/20 cup quarter-final against Glenalmond on Friday 7 June.   Players on both teams were excited at the prospect of batting on a hard, fast wicket coupled with a speedy outfield.

On Tuesday, 28 May, the Geography Department took 28 FIII Geography pupils to Malham.  Travelling by train, they were bound for The Malham Tarn Field Centre, which would become their home for the duration of the four-day trip.

Mapland Scotland is a unique 1:50 000 ordnance survey map of the whole country.

On 23 January 2011, at 06:02, the Dollar Academy Seismometer detected tremors from an earthquake centred in Glenuig, Scotland. The tremor registered an intensity of 4 on the European Macroseismic Scale, which is sufficiently strong for household objects to rattle and swing.

In the middle of Shakespeare’s enigmatic late play, The Winter’s Tale, the young prince asks his mother what kind of story she would like him to tell.  “As merry as you will”, she replies, and in the event her words also provided  a very apt description of the  Advanced Higher trip to the Royal Shakespeare production of the play at The Roundhouse in London.

Pipe Band Visit Sri Lanka

 

Some people went to extraordinary lengths to avoid the end-of-year arctic conditions – 5500 miles to be precise, for 5 members of the Dollar Academy Pipe Band who travelled from Dollar to Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka as guests of the Caledonian Society of Sri Lanka.

Commonwealth Success!

 

Jen McIntosh, yesterday, became Scotland's most successful athlete of the Delhi Commonwealth Games, firing her way to gold in the 50m prone singles to match her pairs display with Kay Copland, and her 3P pairs bronze. Jen recorded a near faultless score of 597 ex 600 over six cards to record a new Games record, smashing the previous score by a significant seven points and equaling the current World Record.
