Home Economics

 

HIGHLIGHTS

 

  • Purpose-built Food and Fabric Technology rooms are well equipped with a wide range of modern equipment.
  • Strong links with the Prep and Junior Schools.
  • Each session pupils take part in charity fund raising exercises to ensure an understanding of large scale food preparation and quality assurance requirements.
  • Form VI pupils prepare a picnic for themselves and Prep I pupils to celebrate the end of SQA examinations.

 

COURSE INFORMATION

 

Traditionally, Home Economics has been responsible for the development of practical, sensory, creative and manipulative skills.  While these skills continue to be important, the following transferable skills are also developed.

Food hygiene and kitchen safety
Current healthy eating guidelines
Basic food preparation techniques
Organisational skills
Health and Safety in Fabric Technology
Basic fabric skills
Design and Make projects
Use of computerised sewing machine
Clothes and fabric care

 

Form VI Student Survival Course

 

This course gives the pupils the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to produce healthy meals on a limited budget after they leave school. Carrying out the practical tasks also develops the pupils’ organisational, time management and sensory evaluation skills.
