Form II Activity Day – 3rd June 2011

On June 3rd, Form II pupils took part in a day which combined activities in EDT, Mathematics and Science.  The purpose of the day was to encourage pupils to appreciate, through problem solving, teamwork and exploring with technology, how all these subjects are connected.

“Dance Power” was designed by the Institute of Engineering and Technology as part of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) programme.  Its central theme, environmental sustainability, was the basis for the activities organised for Form II in each department.  Pupils learned about the Piezoelectric effect and made a Piezo for themselves;  “It was great to have the chance to make a Piezo for ourselves” was a frequent comment.  Colour was the focus in chemistry - an illuminating experience - along with an introduction to its psychological effects.  “Dance is Electric” asked pupils to interpret graphs and to estimate how many watts of energy they could produce when dancing.  Other activities involved pupils in problem-solving tasks where teamwork was vital.  “We liked Cryptic Numbers and Tower of Hanoi – they really made us think!” said one group.

DAPA Mathematics Department Open Evening

On the 3rd March, the Mathematics department held an open evening with the support of DAPA.  The evening was a great success, giving parents the opportunity to experience the variety of Mathematics teaching and learning at Dollar.  At the end of the evening, DAPA kindly presented the department with a cheque for £800.
